  • Research project: Staging Nobility in Urban Space. The Nassau Dynasty and the Towns of the Low Countries (c. 1400 - c. 1570) (2024-2028)

In 1403, the Nassau dynasty acquired the town of Breda and other lordships in the Low Countries. This NWO funded project demonstrates how the Nassaus used urban space to legitimize their privileged position and to represent their noble lineage and lifestyle. To this end, the project focuses on the objects, people and institutions related to the Nassaus. My dissertation examines the tombs of the Nassaus in the Church of Our Lady in Breda and analyzes how the Nassaus, as the new lords and ladies of Breda, used their tombs in the church to represent and consolidate their dynastic authority.
