Donald Trump recently drafted an executive order titled, Making Federal Buildings Beautiful Again, mandating that 'classical architectural style shall be the preferred and default style' for all future federal buildings in the US. And he's not alone - classical architecture is a consistent weapon in the contemporary culture war. But what precisely is meant by traditionalists who invoke 'beauty' and solidity as a counterpoint to what they view as the ugliness of modernist architecture?
