Together with prof. dr. Jelle Haemers (KU Leuven), ACUH member Maartje van Gelder has been awarded an NWO Open Competition Grant (large) for a research project on the role women played in pre-modern urban protests.

Before gaining voting rights, commoners shaped European politics through collective protest. However, the extent of women's involvement remains unclear. This project examines women's participation in urban revolts from 1500, aiming to understand their sudden engagement and rectify misconceptions in medieval-early modern history. It promises new insights into women's political roles and democracy's evolution.
