Our bachelor survey course 'Samen leven in de grote stad: van Oudheid tot heden' was kicked off earlier this month by Martijn Icks with a lecture on Rome. Martijn focussed on the city's multicultural character and how longtime residents responded to the arrival of newcomers during the imperial period. Next up were Sofie Remijsen on cities in the eastern corners of the Roman Empire, after which Danielle van den Heuvel shifted the students' attention to gender relations in early modern Amsterdam and Edo - present-day Tokyo. Until the end of May a range of ACUH members will take a group of 40 bachelor students to, amongst other places and spaces, the cities of late medieval Italy, nineteenth-century Paris, and post-war New York.
