Last month the students on the MA elective ‘Sex and the city’ organized a guided tour of Amsterdam as part of their final assessment. During this walk they presented the results of their research projects on the relationship between gender and the early modern city. We were taken for a tour through the beguinage, alongside the sites of Amsterdam’s historic fish and meat markets, the areas where Amsterdam school children played, and last but not least, we were shown how the architecture of the city impacted on ideas of privacy in the context of neighborly quarrels.
