As a grande finale to the bachelor survey course 'Samen leven in de grote stad', the ACUH will organize a screening of the Dutch docudrama 'De strijd om de stad' (1978, 63 min). More documentary than drama, the film narrates an inner-city neighbourhood’s struggle for affordable housing and the backroom politics through which foreign developers achieve planning permission for the construction of luxurious apartments. The film is both an accurate depiction of the post-war conflict over urban redevelopment and a reminder of the longstanding influence of British developers on Amsterdam's housing market. Screening of the film will be followed by an interview with former housing activist Dick Oosterbaan and Hans Gerson, former planner at Amsterdam's planning department and head of the city's landbank during the 1990s. All are welcome in PCH 1.04 from 17:00 until 19:00.
