Award: Dyos Prize in Urban History for Jan Hein Furnée

Jan Hein Furnée has been awarded the Dyos Prize in Urban History for his article '‘Le bon public de la Haye’. Local governance and the audience in the French opera in The Hague, 1820–1890', Urban History 40 (2013) 625-645.

The Dyos Prize is an annual prize for the best article submitted to the journal Urban History. The Dyos Prize is named after the British urban historian H.J. Dyos, and has been awarded since 1992. 

Furnée's article analyses  the changing audience composition of the French opera in nineteenth-century The Hague through study of subscription and admission records, and in relation to changes in theatrical tastes, theatre architecture and shifting cultural policies of the Dutch kings and the local government.
